House 37 Visits the Met to Study Christian and Germanic Artwork
Mary Smeltzer and Ellyn Pecker
As part of House 37's Archaeology study of Viking artifacts, we visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art with iPads and sketch books in hand. Michelle Marcus, Dalton's Art Historian and Museum Liaison guided the students through the exhibit of 800-1,000AD artifacts. We visited the museum to study Christian and Germanic artwork, specifically the artwork of the Byzantines, Franks, Lombards, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings. The students carefully studied the artifacts and noticed surface details and decorations which helped them identify where the object came from and who they were influenced by. We will use this information to assist us as we study our Vikings artifacts.
