Middle School art teachers, Richard Bottwin, Linda Hanauer, Rob Meredith, and Linda Sirow gave an informative presentation to their students about masks from a variety of cultures. They discussed the anthropological aspects of making and wearing masks, pointing out the aesthetic and formal elements of each. As they viewed examples, children sketched aspects of the masks that were of personal interest. Children then tried on masks from the teaching collection of The Museum of Natural History.
Students sculpted a clay mask, learning to roll out a clay slab and drape it over an armature. They sculpted the features and developed a character for their mask. After the masks were fired in the kiln, students painted them, to bring each character to life. Students had the option to add decorative touches such as beads, buttons, fake fur, or wire to further enhance their masks' personalities. The masks are currently on display in the 12th floor gallery.
