After Dalton students walked through the arch and into the next year, over 50 rising sixth, seventh and eight grade Middle School girls and boys participated in Dalton’s Camp STEAM, a summer enrichment program devoted to the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Over the course of the two weeks, students chose to participate in one or both of two curricular offerings: Arts & Technology: Intro to Programming and Engineering & Science: Aeronautics.
The camp curriculum was tailored to meet a range of skills, welcoming students with little or no knowledge of programming, as well as students familiar with programming languages and robotics. Enjoying a broad range of interdisciplinary experiences, from programming in Javascript and Arduino to flying hand-crafted radio-controlled planes on Randall’s Island, students worked with Dalton faculty and recent Dalton graduates to innovate, collaborate, create and share individual and group projects. At the end of each week, the students celebrated and took pride in the work they made with their own hands. Immersing themselves in real and meaningful problem-solving, students felt connected to their work, overcame obstacles and persevered to accomplish goals - all while having a great time!
