MS Librarian, Roxanne Hsu Feldman, Attends a China Educator Course

As a DGI summer initiative, Roxanne Feldman traveled with Where There Be Dragons to South West China: Yunnan Province. While visiting urban and rural communities, she spent time in the bustling modern city of Kunming, tasting local foods, meeting NGO entrepreneurs, and learning about minority cultures in China. Roxanne visted small towns to observe various tribes still following many older traditions. She gained practical information in managing student groups on culturally enriching and challenging journeys. This information will help to inform future DGI trips.
In Shaxi, Roxanne participated in the local annual Torch festival and visited Buddhist temples with eighth century carvings. Near Weishan, an overnight stay at a Taoist monastery, provided an ideal setting for a discussion of world religions and practiced meditation techniques. She conversed with many locals and immersed herself in learning about cultural specificities of the region, gaining further knowledge of the area's complex history. As an incredible bonus, Roxanne reunited with her father's side of the family that he left behind 65 years ago after the Chinese civil war, following Chiang Kai Shek to Taiwan in 1949.
