Second Graders Undertake Year Long Sustainablility Program
Each year, the second grade houses explore sustainability through a variety of service learning projects and activities. They began this year by learning about recycling and teaching the First Program how to recycle. As a grade, they introduced the second annual Green Recycle Challenge, asking each room in the First Program to do their best to recycle properly.
As part of this challenge, second grade students monitor the recycling of all the classrooms, using their iPads to record the number of correct recycling and garbage bins once a week. They post numbers around the school and announce them weekly through the PA system as part of the second grade's Green Tips. The second grade students also announce Green Tips every Monday morning and feature helpful advice related to issues of sustainability.
This year, each House also worked closely with Kevin Slick, high school history teacher and Dalton's Director of Sustainability. Mr. Slick took the students on a tour of Big Dalton, showing them the various sustainable features of the building as well as the 5th floor terrace that features a garden and a compost bin. Mr. Slick also came to Little Dalton this to teach each second grade house about composting. Some houses had the opportunity to visit Brooklyn Grange, the world's largest Rooftop Farm, right here in New York City. In April, the students led First Program in a celebration of Earth Day, encouraging everyone to wear green and have a "lights-out lunch" to show our support for the environment. To conclude their exploration of sustainability, the second graders created this film to celebrate all of their hard work learning about the environment and acting as the ambassadors of sustainability at Dalton.
