FP House 91 Ally Week Kickoff

Aligned with the School’s commitment to being both a diverse community and a safe place for all children and families, Dalton will observe National Ally Week from September 28 – October 2. As described by the GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) website, Ally Week is meant to “support and celebrate Allies against anti-LGBT bullying and harassment.” For children at First Program, the focus will be on what it means to be a good friend: inclusive and supportive of all those in our community.
During House 91 this Friday, all the children and teachers in grades K - 3 gathered to discuss what an ally is and why we participate in Ally Week. First grade parents, Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson, shared their award-winning book, and tango makes three, with the community.  Inspired by actual events about a penguin family in the Central Park Zoo, the book celebrates acceptance.  With the help of the penguin keeper, two male penguins, whom the keeper recognizes are in love, are given the opportunity to care for an orphaned egg. This warm and compelling book makes clear that it is love that makes a family.

After the reading, everyone sang "Love Makes a Family."  Finally, to signify friendship and support within First Program, many teachers stood with Ally Week signs and proclaimed "I am an Ally."
