Affording Dalton

A Dalton education unfolds a world of opportunity over a lifetime, and we are committed to ensuring that a socioeconomically diverse group of students has access to the Dalton experience. We believe in a tuition that covers essential school programming, transparency in costs so families know what to expect, and a financial aid program that fully meets the needs of a family.

Over 20% of our student body attends Dalton with the support of more than $15 million in need-based financial aid. We are grateful to our generous community and strong endowment, which allow us to execute our commitment to an accessible Dalton education.

  • Financial Aid Assessment

We encourage families to assess their ability to cover school costs for the application year and beyond. If you think you'll need financial aid, apply when you submit your admission application. Requests made after the initial application will only be considered if there's a significant, unexpected change in circumstances, like job loss. Current families needing emergency aid can contact the Financial Aid Office.

Financial aid is available for families across various income levels. Financial aid amounts range based on several factors including family income, the number of children in tuition-charging schools, family assets, among other resources and factors.

We use the Clarity application to equitably assess a need-based financial aid package for students. As part of our commitment to providing an accessible education across socioeconomic levels, Dalton commits to meeting 100% of financial need by filling the gap between the ability to pay and the full tuition.
  • Financial Aid Application

Financial aid applicants must submit the Clarity applications by the following deadlines in order to be considered:
    • New Applicants to Dalton: December 1, 2025
    • Annual Renewal (Current Families): November 1, 2025
At Dalton, all financial aid is need-based. Through the Clarity online application, families provide us with information about financial resources, which include income, assets, expenses, and debts, along with other relevant supporting documents (e.g., recent pay stubs and any business tax returns). The Clarity portal will guide you on which documents are required based on your family’s financial situation.

Registration for our fall webinar exploring Dalton's approach to financial aid, "Demystifying Financial Aid," will be available in Ravenna.

The Clarity application is available in both English and Spanish.

Financial Aid FAQs

List of 4 frequently asked questions.

  • What types of financial aid does the school offer?

All of Dalton's financial aid is in the form of grants, which do not have to be repaid.
  • What is Dalton's approach to financial aid?

All of our financial aid is strictly need-based, and we endeavor to meet 100% of each family's demonstrated need. The mission of our financial aid program is to ensure that we maintain a socio-economically diverse community and that our educational offerings are available to academically qualified students regardless of their family's ability to afford the full tuition.
  • What does "need-based" mean?

It means that Dalton uses a fair and equitable methodology for allocating financial aid based on information families provide about their finances. We assess and grant financial aid based on what a family can reasonably contribute toward the student's educational costs.

Dalton does not increase or decrease offers of financial aid based on an applicant's individual strengths (such as an academic, athletic, or music scholarship) or other merit assessments.
  • How many students receive financial aid?

Approximately 21% of our students receive financial aid, which is granted to students in all grades from kindergarten through 12th grade.
