A Seat at the Table: Encouraging Empathy Through Inquiry

At our spring “A Seat at the Table” event, members of our parent community came together for a thoughtful and energizing conversation around encouraging empathy and curiosity in potentially challenging conversations.
The event began with reflection on how to define diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), with members of the Equity and Belonging Office highlighting common misunderstandings about DEI and the impact of these misconceptions on communities and institutions. Through guided reflection, participants built a shared language to help us talk about this important work with clarity and care. Participants also gained insight into the guiding principles and skills fostered across divisions for Equity and Belonging programming at Dalton.

Later on, the group explored using empathic questions as a tool to spark meaningful conversations and deepen our understanding of one another. The event culminated with small group scenarios where participants practiced using the learnings and strategies from the evening in real-world, everyday situations.
