The New York Common Pantry - House 46

House 46 visited the New York Common Pantry. This trip was part of a first grade service learning project. The students learned about a variety of programs at NYCP that address food scarcity, promote dignity and increase self-sufficiency.
All first grade students saw the kitchen and dining room where breakfast is served daily and 3 hot dinners are served each week. In 2014, this program fed 18,000 New Yorkers. On other days, brown-bag dinners are provided. Project Dignity offers homeless individuals counseling, referral services, haircuts, and laundry services. Project Live Healthy educates people about healthy eating, nutrition and active living. Choice Pantry enables food insecure families to select nutritionally balanced food packages. House 46ers bagged up 1-pound bags of onions that will be distributed to 250 families.
First Grade Houses will use some of the funds that they raised in the First Grade Walk-a-thon to purchase the items necessary to make brown-bag dinners that will be donated to NYCP. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, every first grader will make two sandwiches - a cheese sandwich and a turkey sandwich. Each sandwich, along with a granola bar, will be placed in a bag decorated by the student. The brown-bag dinners will be picked up by NYCP for distribution to their guests.
