Quilts Tell a Story

Beckett's mom, Alicin Williamson, arrived in House 36 bright and early on Tuesday morning March 15, 2016, with a family quilt in hand and a story to tell. She explained to the students that quilts are a narrative part of many cultures. Many quilts tell stories about the personal history of someone’s life or have historical importance because of their purpose or use. She shared a quilt that Beckett's grandmother made for him. One side had the solar system because Beckett was obsessed with outer space. The opposite side had personal photos of family and friends.

Quilts can tell stories about the period in which they were made and the people who made them. Beckett's mom gave each student a felt square and markers. She asked the students to decorate a square to tell a story about themselves.

House 36 parents are planning to hold their own "Quilting Bee." They are going to gather and assemble House 36's patchwork quilt. We can't wait to see the finished product and to see what stories the quilt will tell.
