"Who's in Rabbit's House," a Folktale Performed by House 33
House 33, based on Verna Aardema's version of "Who's in Rabbit's House," a folktale from the Masai people of East Africa, performed a play in culmination of their study of African ecosystems, and how animals and people adapt to particular environments. This has involved trips- to the Bronx Zoo, American Museum of Natural History, The Hall of African Art at the Met and the Textile Arts Center, where the children learned to weave.
As a run up to the play the children:
choreographed animal dances in groups, using what they had learned about the way animals move through, and respond to their environments.
made short movies based on scenes in the play, using iPads and the Puppet Pals app. This also involved the challenges of reading, listening and telling a story that makes sense.
collaborated on mural making depicting different aspects of the African landscape.
studied types of traditional African houses and then used printmaking to decorate the house for the play, using repeated patterns and colors.
