Third Graders Learn About Arms and Armour From Professionals
Jeff Wasson prefers to be referred to as an armourer. He studies and builds 14th and 15th-century armor. He is interested in making armour that is historically accurate and is as close as possible in form to the real thing He has jousted in armour and feels he has a unique perspective on its functionality.
Also a trained artist and sculptor, he captured the proper shapes that make authentic armour an art form. Blacksmiths work by heating pieces of wrought iron or steel until the metal becomes soft enough to be shaped with hand tools. All of the third graders had an opportunity to watch these artisans cast bronze and work on armour smithing and forging. After the presentations, the students were able to decorate a piece of metal.
