Professional Indian Dancer Parijat Desai Teaches FP Students Dance in the Round
Parijat Desai visited FP on Tuesday morning to teach collective rhythm and movement workshops called Dance In The Round.
In Dance In The Round, choreographer/dancer Parijat Desai taught Garba and Raas—circle dances that originate in Gujarat, India, and that are played across the South Asian diaspora.
Typically Garba and Raas are played during the fall Navratri season—nine nights of dance and community. Parijat created DITR as a way to share these dances outside their cultural and religious context, and to make them accessible to people of all abilities and backgrounds.
Garba and Raas have circles and repetition embedded in their structures, and contain a transformative power. In the deeply human experience of dancing together in a circle, we find connection to one another and individual freedom inside an organic group.
Parijat worked with second grade students from Houses 23 and 24, as well as a mixed grade class for any student of Indian and South Asian descent. Many thanks to second grade house advisor Shobana Ram, who suggested Parijat as a visiting artist.
