As 4th grade students settling in and familiarizing themselves with the Middle School Library's collection and procedures, they now move to use their intellectual abilities and start their exploration of some newly introduced concepts of where and how they receive their information.
The first step is to analyze and categorize their sources of information: Providers of Information vs Containers of Informaion/Conveyers of Information vs Devices. Students from each House had a chance to brainstorm and generate a large list of Information Sources and examine how certain sources could be grouped together. Students came to the realization that Newspaper (in print or online,) or Facebook, or Google, are but Containers and Conveyers of information -- and only people (journalists, Facebook account holders, selves/researchers) could truly be the PROVIDERS of information. This establishes the foundation of next steps in our Information Literacy curriculum: determining the credibility of the providers of information.
