Girls Varsity Basketball Wins 16th Consecutive Dalton Invitational Tournament

By WILL BOUSQUETTE

On Thursday, November 30, Girls Varsity Basketball began its regular season competition in the Dalton Invitational, a tournament featuring Dalton and three non-league opponents: Grace Church, Packer-Collegiate, and Trevor Day.

The Tigers put together two impressive performances in the Invitational, winning their two games by a combined 85 points. The team was sound on defense and indomitable in transition, with four players scoring in double digits in their first game against Packer. Caleigh Ryan (‘18), Elise Bousquette (‘18), Toni DaCosta (‘20), and Ema Schumer (‘18) combined to score 89 points over Dalton’s two games. Ryan led the team in scoring in both games with 15 points in the team’s 72-20 victory over Grace Church and 19 in the 54-21 championship win against Packer. The win denotes the sixteenth consecutive Dalton Invitational Tournament Championship that Dalton’s Girls Varsity Basketball team has claimed.

Another highlight of the tournament for the Tigers lays in an individual accomplishment. In the fourth quarter of the championship game, co-captain Caleigh Ryan scored her 1,000th Dalton varsity point. The basket that propelled her over the 1,000 point threshold, a three-point swish, made Ryan the fifteenth Dalton player to join the 1,000 point club, the first since Henry Lowe (‘12) in 2012.
It was a weekend to remember in Dalton sports history and an auspicious start to GVB’s season.

Boys Varsity Basketball Opens Season in Impressive Fashion

By BO PEPONIS

In its regular season debut this past weekend, Boys Varsity Basketball clinched the Dalton Invitational tournament victory in a championship game that went into double overtime.

In the team’s first-round matchup, the Tigers dominated Grace Church, limiting Grace to just under ten points in the entire game, with Dalton winning 54-8. The starters for the first game of the season were co-captain Peter Gardner (‘18), Matt Murstein (‘20), co-captain Ryan Kotin (‘18), co-captain Jasper Taback (‘18), and Brian Cromwell (‘19). Kotin said that the first win “was a total team effort.” He elaborated on the win: “To win in that fashion was a great way to set the tempo for the season and build confidence before we enter league play.”

The Tigers faced stiffer competition in the final matchup against Trevor Day. The game was a back-and-forth effort, with Dalton’s strong perimeter shooting attack keeping the team right alongside Trevor Day, with Dalton up by just a few points entering the second half. The teams found themselves tied at the end of regulation, forcing overtime. Coming off the bench in his second game ever on the varsity team, shooting guard Mark Engel (‘20) hit a game-tying three-pointer with under thirty seconds left in the first overtime period, forcing the game into double overtime.

In another impressive rookie showing, Sean Ryan (‘20) led the scoring for Dalton with 16 points, helping the Tigers to a 63-58 victory. Ryan said that he “loved the intensity that the entire team brought on both sides of the floor.”

The Tigers continued their strong start this past Wednesday, defeating Friends Seminary 80-55. Kotin and Engel scored over thirty points combined.
