In Praise of Mary DiCarlo's "Wonderful" Reading Lesson

Evidence that children remember valuable lessons in kindergarten emerged in the NYTimes recently, where K teacher Mary DiCarlo's inspiring message about reading and learning to read made its way into a book review. "In Praise of Evan S. Connell," written by Dalton Alumni parent Meg Wolitzer, mentions her son's recall of Ms. DiCarlo's positive declaration that it is equally wonderful to learn how to read as it is wonderful to know how to read.
In her "Enthusiast" book review on January 25, Ms. Wolitzer strongly recommends Evan S. Connell's book, Mrs. Bridge. She references Mrs. D's wonderful reading lesson to recommend the book:

"When my older son started kindergarten, his teacher asked the class how many of them knew how to read. A few kids raised their hands, and Miss D said, “Oh, that’s wonderful! ”Then she asked how many of them couldn’t read, and the rest raised their hands. “Oh,” she said, “that’s wonderful too. Because now you will get to learn how to read with Miss D."

When I think about the 1959 novel “Mrs. Bridge,”...If you have already read it, that’s wonderful, for chances are you love it too, and know how brilliant it is. And if you haven’t read it, or perhaps have never even heard of it, well, that’s wonderful too, because you are still lucky enough to be able to read it for the first time."
