Parsons - Extrapolation - Dalton - Collaboration

Eleventh Grade students, their teacher Kevin Slick and graduate students from the Parsons School of Design (under the stewardship of Elliott Montgomery) took part in a Parsons-Extrapolation-Dalton Collaboration.  Some students were engaged in speculative and transdisciplinary design.  They were asked to create “A Retrospective of Puerto Rico: 2018 - 2030” while others had the task of developing "Ethics of the Future" and how these laws might shape human behavior and design.
Students worked with a scenario in which they imagined submissions to a hypothetical future exhibition on “A Retrospective of Puerto Rico: 2018 - 2030” for The Museum of Puerto Rican History.  The students designed artifacts they speculated would be appropriate for this exhibition given Puerto Rico's likely political, economic and cultural developments in the wake of last summer’s hurricane.

Others imagined they were part of consultant group given the task of developing an "Ethics of the Future."  Students imagined how these supposed laws (e.g., "A law that would make it illegal to erase your browser history") might shape human behavior and design.  After speculating on possible outcomes, students designed these possible outcomes by using household materials to tell the story of these future developments.  Overall, these activities reflected the ongoing work with the Extrapolation Factory in the fields of Future Studies and Interdisciplinary Design.
