Grade 4 Students Participate in a Naturalization Ceremony
Edinger House was fortunate indeed to be invited to participate in a mock naturalization ceremony by United States Magistrate Judge Steward D. Aaron, thanks to his former colleague Kelli Cooney.
Before the trip with Kelli's leadership, the children prepared by watching a video on the topic (for those really preparing for citizenship), trying out a practice citizenship test, and filling out official documents, using their Ellis Island Simulation identities. We arrived at the courthouse and were met by Judge Aaron's law clerk and registrar. They had each child sign their document before the judge came in. He then gave a clear overview of the process and took them through the ceremony. After that, he handed each child a naturalization certificate (for their Ellis Island Simulation person). Lastly, a marshal came and completely mesmerized the children, even setting off his taser and having them visit the cells adjacent to the courtroom. It was memorable indeed for all of us. Our great thanks to Keilli and Judge Aaron.
