Author LeUyen Pham Delights First Program Students
Celebrated author/illustrator LeUyen Pham visited The First Program on Friday, October 18. She is extremely prolific, having illustrated over 120 books for young audiences, including The Princess in Black series, Vampirina Ballerina, the graphic novel Real Friends and sequel Best Friends, the picture book Grace for President, and many other fiction and non-fiction titles as well.
During her visit, LeUyen shared the Vietnamese version of the folk-tale Cinderella, which ends differently than its Western counterpart. She spoke about her travels, recounting a journey to Zimbabwe with particularly memorable encounters with animals. LeUyen explained that she stops and takes time to draw each place rather than simply snapping pictures and moving on. LeUyen even held up her sketchbook for students to see beautiful areas she has visited and drawn - showing how she has improved over time with great dedication and practice.
Woven throughout her stories was the idea that you can make friends wherever you go through the common language of art. She also explained that it is impossible to make a mistake while drawing as every line can become something new and different.
LeUyen concluded each session by creating a drawing based on student suggestions, and featuring Dalton community members here at Dalton - both teachers and students!
LeUyen Pham's books will be featured at the PA Book Fair and each book purchased will come with a signed book plate.
