Theater Teacher Bob Sloan Gives Guest Lecture on the History of Jazz Music
In their senior elective "The Black Radical Tradition," students in History Teacher Donald Okpalugo's class were treated to a visit from Theater Chair/jazz history enthusiast Bob Sloan who spoke about the history of jazz music and black entertainment in early 20th-century New York City.
Mr. Sloan brought several catalogs filled with incredible black and white photos of legendary musicians and some old playbills and other memorabilia/artifacts from the era. Students have just finished looking at early 20th-century Black radical thought, and this lecture provided much welcomed supplementary information on the contributions that black Americans made to various music genres and the entertainment industry as a whole.
