Eighth Grader Won 2nd Day of Scripps NYC Spelling Bee

Ashwin Ranjan ’24 earned first place in Day 2 of Scripps NYC Spelling Bee sponsored by the Daily News, qualifying him for the National Scripps Spelling Bee in May. Charlie Kim ’25 and Olivia Meyer ’26 also competed. Charlie placed 5th and Olivia placed 7th.

The Daily News Spelling Bee is a city-wide competition for independent and public school students from fifth to eighth grade. In this two-day event, Ashwin went up against the city’s best young spellers from all five boroughs. In the final round, he correctly spelled “bauxite”, sedimentary rock and the world's main source of aluminum, to win the competition. Congratulations to Ashwin!
