Students Explore Media Literacy Skills in HS Orientation Program

In today’s world of increased digital interaction, media literacy has become an essential skill. As part of this year’s High School Orientation Program, 10th and 11th grade students took part in a series of faculty-led workshops to learn film theories and multimedia production techniques to explore discourses around identity—in particular representations of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexuality.
In these workshops, students joined Theater Arts and Design Teacher Meg Zeder, Theater Department Chair Bob Sloan, Teacher Charlie Forster Stewert and Dalton alum Ian Quinlan ’05 for interactive presentations and discussions to explore how visual styles, cinematography and editing skills, and acting techniques can work congruently to tell a story or convey a deeper meaning to the viewer.

Next week, students will continue their media literacy workshops in a series of Film Study mini-courses based on a specific theme and objective. Students will be paired with faculty and staff members to build multimedia projects based on the following topics:

  • Food in Film -- How does cooking and food in media and film impact an audience?
  • Sports and Society -- How are athletes impacted by the media lens?
  • Conflict -- How can a fight on screen illuminate more than the topic of debate?
  • The Political is Personal -- How do the personal and the political interweave to make compelling narratives?
  • Seeing the Unseen -- How does film draw our attention to the hidden, microscopic, or underrepresented?
  • Lies and Liars -- How does film both reveal and enable lies?
  • In The Image Of -- How can we renew cultural artistic practices passed through family and community?
  • Travel -- How does travel illuminate truths about ourselves?
