MS Debate Team Takes Top Spot at the NY League Tournament

Dalton's Middle School debate team took the top spot at the New York Debate League's December tournament on December 5.
Twenty-four Dalton students gathered virtually to debate whether there should be required subjects in high school, whether art should be displayed anonymously, and whether the two-party system is bad for Democracy. Competing in the varsity division against 129 students who represented the strongest competition on offer from 13 schools in three states, Dalton debaters took home a blizzard of prizes.
  • Aida Kasparova ’25, Anysa Bickici ’25, and Nilomi Weerakkody ’25 were the champions, coming in first place with an undefeated record.
  • Aiden Leathers ’25, Efe Ilgar ’25, and Alex Kim ’25 were 6th place overall.
  • Maxwell Massiah ’25, Ollie Feder ’25, and Vihaan Kotahwala '25 were 7th place overall.
  • Aminata Diallo ’25, Arav Mehta ’25, and Cole Corper '25 were 10th place overall.
In addition, several of these students were recognized individually for their high speaker scores:
  • Aida was the top speaker overall
  • Anysa was 5th speaker overall
  • Vihaan was 6th speaker overall
  • Efe was the 10th speaker overall
Every Dalton team managed a victory, and through their combined efforts the squad collectively won 20 debates, giving Dalton the second highest number of wins out of any school competing—just one short of the first place school. This worked out to an impressive 62% win rate, the third highest of any school in attendance. This success comes on the heels of a similar showing at the November tournament, and the team looks forward to their next competition in January.
