First Program Students Create Dioramas of Eastern Woodlands Indigenous Peoples

In social studies this term, First Program students created dioramas about the Eastern Woodlands Indigenous Peoples. Students learned that dioramas are a form of storytelling and that each part of the display plays a different role.
After learning about the structure of a diorama, students began their research. They chose a particular scene to replicate and focused their investigation on answering the question: “How can your research inform and enhance your diorama display?” Students then used books and online databases to collect information. When planning their scenes, third graders were tasked to draw a blueprint of their diorama and note what natural materials the Indigenous People used. From there, they selected equipment they needed to reconstruct their scenes.

After finishing planning, third graders were thrilled to finally begin creating and constructing! Starting with background, foreground, and finally focal point, students problem-solved as they transformed craft materials into elements within their displays. Finally, in preparation for our gradewide exhibition, students created their own museum labels to showcase their expertise based on their research.
