HS Seniors Venture to NYPL for Archival Research Workshop
Seven Dalton High School seniors from the History Capstone Program ventured forth (unafraid) to the New York Public Library for a workshop on archival research.
Organized in partnership with our own Dalton library, students had the opportunity to examine artifacts from the Dorot Jewish Division and the Milstein Division of United States History, Local History & Genealogy.
This first-hand engagement with authentic non-published primary source material (ranging from anti-Semitic propaganda to period photographs to Nixon re-election campaign posters) allowed the Capstone participants to flex their well-honed skill set in critical historical inquiry. Given the challenge of exploring materials they had never seen before, the Capstone students responded by deploying the essential skills of contextualization, close reading, and making connections as they sought to unearth the significance of the materials at hand.
The field trip was also a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the city's invaluable resource, the NYPL! Special thanks to Dalton High School Librarian Tobi Fineberg for aiding this venture.
