Debate Team Enjoys "Scary Good" October

The debate team’s performance in October was scary good. First, at the Bellaire Forensic Tournament, Ollie Feder ‘25 and Vihaan Kotahwala ‘25 made it all the way to the semifinals, putting them in the top four out of 50 teams competing in their division. Then, two weeks later, the varsity debaters attended the New York City Debate and Speech Invitational, affectionately nicknamed “Big Bronx,” one of the most competitive tournaments in the country.
At the Bronx this spring, Leo Yu '23, and Shreya Saravanan '25 advanced to the octafinal round, earning a gold bid to the Tournament of Champions. Additionally, out of 316 participants, Anya Levin '24 received 11th place speaker, and Annika Jha '24 received 20th place, the strongest showing of any sophomores at this tournament in Dalton history. Finally, our parliamentary cousins took high honors on Halloween, as Alex Kim '25 and Efe Ilgar '25 became finalists at the Vassar College Invitational.

Overall, more than 20 students debated in October. November is a new month with new topics. The Public Forum Debate Team will argue the benefits of forthcoming US regulations on cryptocurrency. The middle school debate team will attend their first tournament and debate whether college should be free, whether schools should be allowed to discipline students for off-campus use of social media, and whether the voting age should be lowered. We wish them good luck!

Students interested in Public Forum debate are welcome to join the team at any time during the year. If you’d like to join, contact Evan Streams (estreams@dalton.org).
