Fourth Graders Explore Water Quality and Macroinvertebrates at Black Rock Forest

How can we get over 90 highly inquisitive and energetic 4th grade scientists excited about evaluating ways of interpreting if an ecosystem is healthy? Through offering an experiential learning opportunity at Black Rock Forest! The rich biodiversity and varied topography of the 3,838-acre forest fully engaged our young student scientists as they investigated stream ecosystem health.
Donning waders and boots, the 4th graders went forth unafraid into two of the aquatic Black Rock Forest ecosystems. Students collected data by measuring air and stream temperatures and conducting water chemistry tests to ascertain the stream water's pH levels and dissolved oxygen concentrations. While in the water, students did their “river dances” to collect, count, and identify macroinvertebrates found in each ecosystem as part of their inquiry into how they are bioindicators for the health of stream ecosystems. In addition to completing fieldwork, the students enjoyed an outdoor picnic and a short hike with stunning views.

Back at Dalton, 4th graders built upon their findings at Black Rock Forest; they compiled, analyzed, and shared their data with 9th Grade Biology students. As the cumulation of their Evolution and Ecosystems Assignment, students will apply what they’ve learned about Ecosystems to their Biome Research Project, where they will create a diorama museum exhibit of a biome.

Special thanks to Becky Gamzon, Kendall Hakimi, and Tarell Thomas for chaperoning; Shahar Atary, Rene Jimenez, and Sean Salant for logistical support; and Aaron, Katie, and Matt from Black Rock Forest for helping make these trips such a success.
