"A Seat at the Table" Kicks Off with Dr. Liza Talusan

At last week’s “A Seat at the Table” kick-off event, the Office of Equity and Belonging and the Parents Association welcomed Dr. Liza Talusan, a nationally recognized facilitator and educator in the areas of leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion. She shared strategies with the parent community on ways to practice identity-conscious parenting and caregiving, acknowledging the multiple ways one may navigate identity throughout life. Dr. Talusan provided research around best practices and conversation prompts for intentional dialogue rooted in curiosity, collaboration, compassion, and community.
Over dinner, the parent community learned tools to have more dynamic identity conversations with their children. They modeled these practices by engaging in small group discussions, sharing aspects of their experiences while learning from others, and fostering an atmosphere of understanding.

Chief of Equity and Belonging Johára Tucker closed out the evening, remarking on the powerful, empathetic conversations that took place. She reminded parents that these connections and reflections are also taking place in student programming. Long after she shared final words, parents lingered, engaging further in conversations and community.

We look forward to sharing details for our next A Seat at the Table event that will take place in the spring.
