MS Welcomes Holocaust Survivor for Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Assembly
During the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day assembly, 6th-8th Graders gathered to hear from Arnold Newfield, a Holocaust survivor who was born into the Westerbork, Holland transit camp in 1942. Mr. Newfield, who asked the community to call him “Arnie,” shared stories of his and his family’s experiences in concentration camps and their eventual immigration to the United States.
As part of the 8th Grade curriculum, students learn about the Holocaust in their English and History classes. The classroom discussions along with their close reading of “Night” by Elie Wiesel, informed and guided the students’ time with Arnie. At the assembly, Beatrice Levine ‘28 and Tess Goldfarb ‘28 introduced and asked Arnie questions gathered from the students.
During House periods leading up to the Assembly, 6th and 7th Graders were introduced to individuals who played an important role in “standing up” to the injustices of the Holocaust or survived the Holocaust. The stories provided context for hearing from Arnie Newfield.
Accompanying Arnie, who is part of the Witness Theater program, was Anya Leybovich, Program Director of Witness Theater. Witness Theater aims to elicit, expose, and memorialize the stories of survival while at the same time forming deep and meaningful relationships between generations. The program is supported by the larger Selfhelp Community Services organization that provides a broad set of services to more than 25,000 elderly, frail, and vulnerable New Yorkers annually while remaining the largest provider of comprehensive services to Holocaust survivors in North America.
