“City in History” Students Visit Argosy Map Gallery
Students in the City in History elective visited the Argosy Map Gallery in midtown to explore how antique maps help historians study and understand the history of urban spaces.
Laura Ten Eyck, Director of the Argosy Map Gallery, talked with students about her craft as a map dealer and showed maps ranging from the Viele Map (1865) that depicts the original waterways and landfill in Manhattan, to a Hermann Bollman’s pictorial map (1965) prepared for the World's Fair in New York City. Laura then pulled maps based on each individual student's interests.
