Created by Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa is an annual holiday that celebrates the history, values, and culture of the African-American and Pan-African communities. Just before winter break, the Parents of Black Students group hosted a festive holiday celebration for the Dalton community, which featured a traditional Kwanzaa kinara candle-lighting ceremony.  As part of the ceremony, students shared reflections about the meaning of each of the seven Kwanzaa principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). The evening was also filled with food, music, crafts and games.
