Middle School Debate Team Competes at Championship

Last weekend, the Middle School Debate Team competed at the New York Debate League Championship at Tuckahoe Middle School.
The team debated in five debates on the following complex topics:
  • Middle school English classes should prioritize the classics rather than contemporary works
  • National service should be mandatory in the United States
  • Facial recognition technology should not be used in public spaces
  • This house regrets the United States’ embargo on Cuba
  • This house is in favor of state-level junk food taxes
Our students had been preparing all year for the championship, and their hard work paid off! The team of Alexandra Tucker '29, Elliot Higgins-Woo '29, and Sophie Tu '29 finished with an undefeated 5-0 record in the preliminary rounds and finished third overall. The team also won several individual speaker awards, including:

Gabriel Alexander '29 - 12th speaker
Penelope Koehl '29 - 9th speaker
Kelly Hale '29 - 6th speaker
Melody Kim '29 - 5th speaker
Michelle Jia '29 - 2nd speaker

It was a great weekend and year for the team. Thank you to our debaters for all of your hard work. Thank you to our judges, Cathy Shu P'30, Miraldina Meyer P'26 '29, and Kalin Agarwal P'30, for their help and support. Thank you to Emmalyn Zuzunaga '26 for her contributions, as well as our other student coaches, Austin Gordon '26, Olivia Meyer '26, Sam Worthington '26, and Shreya Ranjan '26.
