History Students Eat Their Way Through Jackson Heights
Students in “This is New York: A History” (led by Emma Rothberg) and “You Are What You Eat” (led by Kevin Slick) ventured together (with an assist from Natalie Orozco of the HS Library) to Jackson Heights for a walking/tasting tour of this amazing neighborhood.
Partnering with “Eat Your World,” students learned about the history of Jackson Heights and the forces of immigration and development that have transformed the neighborhood into one of the most diverse in the city. Students learned about the importance of the subway (opened 1904) and Queensboro Bridge (opened 1909), restrictive housing policy and immigration laws, and family connection to the development of Queens, the borough, and Jackson Heights, the neighborhood. The students fortified this understanding with a culinary journey from Bangladeshi cuisine to Nepalese, to Colombian. We would and could have explored and eaten more, but we were stuffed (with many award-winning momos). Some impromptu dancing with the proprietor of “Nepali Bhanchha Ghar” rounded out the experience.
