Tiger Aunt Tales: Students Turn Story into Shadow Show
Recently, in 5th-grade Mandarin, students learned the folklore story “Tiger Aunt.”
In the story, a mother leaves home at night for an emergency and warns her three children not to open the door because Tiger Aunt, a monster, eats children. That night, Tiger Aunt arrives and tricks the youngest brother with candy. After he opens the door, she quietly eats him while sending his older sister and brother away. Realizing what happened, the older two escape up a tree. Tiger Aunt waits below, trying to lure them down. The older sister pretends she is willing to sacrifice herself and asks Tiger Aunt for hot oil “to taste better,” then uses it to defeat the monster and save herself and her brother.
As homework, students drew comic strips to show their understanding of the storyline. In class, they created shadow puppets of the characters and performed short puppet shows in groups. Each group’s retelling was a little different, and students had a lot of fun watching one another’s interpretations. Click here to watch the videos of the shadow puppets shows!
