First Graders in House 45 Tour 11th Graders Around Little Dalton
Prior to spring break, several 11th graders in Shira Kohn and Jennifer Stolper Muenz's Public History course walked to 91st Street to have personalized tours of First Program led by Alison Kleger-Ramsey’s House 45 first graders.
Ms. Kleger-Ramsey’s class had recently completed an Assignment learning about the Dalton community. Students had toured the building, noting who works and learns in the various parts of First Program and, using digital photographs as a foundation, labeled the rooms. Next, they interviewed adults in the 91st Street community to learn about their roles and what they enjoy, from their favorite desserts to the best parts of working at Dalton. They prepared appropriate questions in small groups, took notes during their interviews, and used their research to create tour guide scripts. They then sent tour invitations through the Little Dalton Post Office to the 11th graders at Big Dalton, who enthusiastically replied. On March 13th, the juniors arrived at First Program for small-group tours led entirely by House 45 students, who shared their interview information with the older students as they toured the building. No one got lost! At the end of the tours, there were many hugs and new friends made.
