Brooklyn DA Visits Fifth Grade on Behalf of The Brooklyn Crimes Against Children Unit

Linda Lee Urmacher
On Wednesday, February 21st the Brooklyn DA came to the Dalton Middle School to personally thank the Fifth Grade students for their community service work with the Brooklyn Crimes Against Children Unit. Each of the students posed for a photograph with the DA and received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Kings County District Attorney's Office.
The Brooklyn DA thanked the students for reaching out to children in need. The Fifth Grade became involved in this important service project in December, when their House Advisors attended the Brooklyn DA Office Holiday Party in support of the Brooklyn Crimes Against Children Unit. The afternoon at the DA's Office was both difficult and moving. Because of the many gifts contributed by the 5th graders and the money raised at various 5th grade bake sales, the DA was able to hire a magician for the party, purchase a realistic Santa outfit for a volunteer Santa, offer pizza, snacks, and cake, and provide each child with a bag of gifts (especially chosen by each child’s Case Worker). For many of these children, the December party was their only holiday celebration and the gifts they received at the party, their only holiday presents. Despite their heartbreaking circumstances, they were excited during the party and truly happy to have attended such a wonderful celebration and to have been given truly thoughtful and special gifts.

Each child excitedly wrote letters of thanks to "Santa and his elves" for the special treats they received. After this event, each of the Fifth Grade House Advisors talked with their respective Houses and explained to the students the difference they made in the lives of so many other kids. The students smiled at the thought of being "Santa and his elves" and, since then, have frequently asked about updates on how the children were doing. The visit by the Brooklyn DA enhanced the Fifth Grade’s experience and brought to life the extraordinary impact small and meaningful acts of kindness and caring can have on a community.
