Dalton Celebrates at Annual Candlelighting Ceremony

Dalton students, faculty and alumni came together to celebrate the Winter Solstice before departing for Winter Break. Candlelighting, one of Dalton's loveliest traditions, is a school-wide celebration of the Season of Lights. It takes place on the last school day before the winter recess, this year on Friday, December 18th.
Students from all three divisions assembled in the Martin Theater for a beautiful Winter Solstice ceremony during which a Senior recited the traditional Candlelighting poem, written by Dalton alumna Nancy Cardozo '36. A student representative from each grade then crossed the stage to light a candle in the presence of Ellen Stein '65, Head of School, and the entire assembly. Representatives from many Dalton constituencies followed -- including parents, faculty, staff and alumni -- lending a feeling of continuity to the ceremony. This year Dalton's alumni were represented by Ellen Stein who lit the last candle in recognition of her class's 45th reunion year before wishing the community a wonderful holiday break. Music throughout the ceremony was provided by the HS Chorus as well as Dalton's two a cappella groups.
