Dalton-Kenya Photography Project on Display at 89th Street
Eileen Gumport
Stop by the 89th Street Lobby and 2nd Floor Gallery to see admire photographs taken by high school students in Kenya whose education is sponsored by Ujima, The Dalton-Kenya Project. Each photograph details the students’ lives both at school and at home and bear delightful – although occasionally poignant -- explanations.
Ujima: The Dalton-Kenya Project is a Dalton club that raises money to send students to high school in Subukia, Kenya. The project was founded in 2004 by Koigi wa Wamwere, a former Dalton parent and human rights activist in Kenya, and Neil Getnick, another former Dalton parent. Since then, the club has sent 65 students to high school. At Dalton, the club is active in all three divisions; its goals is to fundraise scholarship money and raise awareness within the Dalton community about our Kenyan counterparts.
The photography project was initiated just over three years ago to bridge the gap between students at Dalton and in Kenya. The Ujima Club sent disposable cameras to Kenya for the students to use to document their lives at school and home, with family and friends and much more. For many of the students, it was their first time ever using a camera! We invite you to explore the exhibit, in the lobby showcase and on the 2nd floor, and meet the children whose lives have been changed by the Dalton community.
Congratulations to Dalton students Emily Weiss and Isabel Ostrer for their vision, effort, and patience in seeing through this amazing project.
