Clubs and committes are a lively and integral component of a Dalton education. Students participate in a wide variety of them including the Venturing Croo, a club of approximately 20-25 members. Clubs and committees offer group participation and leadership opportunities outside of the classroom. "(The Dalton) Venturing Croo is a club...which was named after the Applalachian Mountain Club's huts in the White Mountains," said Jon Furman, one of Croo's four leaders.
Furman continued, "In our charter, we establish that the purpose of the Croo is three fold: To share our love of the wilderness with Dalton students, to offer an opportunity to students who may not have much experience with the wilderness a chance to enjoy the outdoors in a manner designed to nurture a lifelong love of hiking and wilderness excursions, and to provide the chance for a broad range of students to be together, get to know each other and cultivate friendships that might not otherwise develop at Dalton. We welcome all students regardless of experience in the outdoors.
In the past, we have taken multi-day trips to Mt. Lafayette and the Presidential Range in New Hampshire, rafted on the Delaware River, and biked around Manhattan, to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and, most recently, up the Palisades. For the rest of this year, we hope to have a winter trip of some sort and a multi-day hiking trip in the spring."
