Dalton SMART Teams Attend Science Symposium at Rockefeller U.

Sunday, May 6 - Two Dalton SMART Teams presented their work at Rockefeller University in the Third Annual SMART Team Symposium. Students worked with a scientific mentor who studies the structures of proteins and read original structural biology research articles in order to design a 3D model of a protein. The models highlight their understanding of the protein's structure and function.
The first-year SMART Team worked with Dr. Aneel Aggarwal from Mount Sinai School of Medicine on the structures of DNA polymerases that correctly copy damaged DNA. Loss of these polymerases can lead to cancer.

The second-year SMART Team worked with Dr. Xiayang Qiu from Pfizer to study the development of an antibody that could be used to lower cholesterol. This antibody blocks the interaction of the LDL receptor (a protein that removes bad cholesterol from the blood) with a protein that causes its degradation, PCSK9.

The students will also be presenting their work at Dalton during the Science Social on May 8th and at the Interschool Science Symposium on May 23.
