As knowledgeable scientists, House 15 students embarked on a new writing unit: “Writing like Scientists!” The students will be writing all about things that they notice in the world around them.
House 15 has been reading winter books and learning what animals do in the winter, why our days are shorter, and the types of clothes people wear in the winter. During their read alouds of non-fiction books, they have shared what they learned with their classmates. The teachers modeled for the children how to explain the information clearly when presenting it to others. The children are eager to write everything down. They each received a scientific notepad for taking notes. They explored the website Pebble-Go which has short clips full of information about animals in winter, winter weather, snow and changes in the season. After watching each short video clip, the children took some time to document the information in their notepads. This information will help them think of topics for their own scholarly writing. Research continued, by taking a short walk to Central Park to collect artifacts. When they returned to class, they filled their notebooks with more information and talked about what they observed. They will have a publishing party to celebrate the completion of their books.
