Egg Drop Challenge - A House of Cards

February 11, 2013 - Juniors and senior Physics students gathered in the Goldman Library at 89th Street to try their engineering skills to protect an egg from breaking after falling from a 15 foot drop. The classic assignment required the students to use 40 cards (or less) and a stapler to engineer the egg vessel design. While there were several breaks, there were an impressive number of eggs saved for the omlet pan.
Aside from simply protecting the egg (no small feat) the ultimate challenge was to produce the design with the fewest number of cards; simplicity is coveted as one of the golden rings of good engineering and design. Kudos to the winners, Teja Gopal '14 and Elias Stengel-Eskin '14 for using only 23 cards.
