House 36 - Research Assistants - Dr. Tarun Kapoor Visits FP Science
In House 36's science class this week, Dr. Tarun Kapoor, a researcher at Rockefeller University and dad of Jai visited to talk about proteins. The students learned that proteins are critically important for our body that help us do many things, including to see, feel, hear, and learn!
Eating proteins is important so our body can build, repair and maintain these molecules within and continue to carry out these functions. Dr. Tapoor explained that proteins form chains, very similar to a chain of linked paperclips. Chains of proteins are more complex, however. These chains are called polymers. Recently, scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize - a gold medal for scientists that do good things for the world - for identifying a glow-in-the-dark protein from jellyfish called GFP. The students were able to see the proteins in onion cells and in pollen using a digital microscope. Before the class ended, students were able to create their own polymers that looked like glowing green strings. Taking some home was a bonus! We are thankful to Dr. Kapoor for sharing what he studies in his lab.
