Geoffrey Gund Retirement Celebration - 35 Years of Teaching
Members of Dalton's History Department, chaired by Jennifer Stolper-Muenz, hosted a retirement celebration for Mr. Geoffrey Gund, who will end his 35-year teaching career at Dalton in June.
Several alums were in attendance and many spoke about Mr. Gund's marvelous teaching and valuable life-lessons learned in his history classes. Mr. Michael Sturm, high school math teacher and long-time colleague, delivered a "Poem for Geoffrey Gund," featuring Mr. Sturm's clever, almost legendary rhymes and humor.
Remarking in his parting speech about changes he'd seen at Dalton during his tenure, Mr. Gund said, "Certainly there are changes that have occurred; changes in curriculum, in diversity of the student body, and in the usage of technology,...but there are certain fundamental concepts that truly remain core to Dalton...the 9th grade material objects project where you can choose an object and carry it through to a paper and learn other valuable skills." He focused on the value of Lab, "Lab is what sets Dalton apart." Mr. Gund also spoke with pride about his creation of the Committee on Student Conduct, a student and faculty committee that puts students at the center of the process in deciding the disposition of students who are accused of cheating. He finished with noticeably warm affection for his colleagues in the History department, pleased about their current level of collegiality, collaboration and excellence in teaching. He concluded his remarks by saying, "I'm so glad to be leaving Dalton at a time when it is doing such a good job in fulfilling its mission."
