Last Friday night all of the first grade teachers volunteered their time at the New York Common Pantry. They served dinner to those in need in our community. Their volunteer work was a kick off for a grade wide community service project. Over the next few weeks, each first grade house will visit the pantry to learn first hand what it does and how important it is to the people of NYC. Prior to Thanksgiving, the grade will be preparing and packaging a meal to be delivered to the NYCP.
What a rewarding project.
NY Common Pantry (NYCP) is dedicated to reducing hunger while promoting dignity and self-sufficiency in underserved communities throughout NYC. Last year this organization provided over 1.8 million meals, and has over 250 volunteers on a weekly basis. Alison Goodman, 1st grade level leader, visited the the Common Pantry and volunteered there last summer. She found it to be such a positive and rewarding experience she suggested that the first grade houses take on this community service opportunity.
