Hakeem Rahim and Others Address HS Assembly on Mental Illness

Dalton's Health Coordinator, Justine Fonte, arranged a unique assembly dedicated to addressing mental healh issues. The students were split up into two groups for a more intimate presentation experience on mental health given by three people. Dr. Michael Birnbaum, who discussed a student research project aimed at raising awareness around mental health issues through the lens of social media. Dalton parent Barbara Ricci then spoke about an opportunity for Dalton students to participate in a 5K event that aims to shed light on mental health issues in New York City.
Hakeem Rahim who works for the National Alliance of Mental Illness discussed his own personal journey with mental illness. He described his experience as a Harvard student who battled and eventually was able to overcome a diagnosis of bipolar disorder during his sophomore year. Mr. Rahim then challenged the students in attendance to be compassionate; to speak out in support of people battling mental health issues and to become allies in the fight against the stigma that is associated with mental health issues. Mr. Rahim then held a question and answer session in which he answered both personal and general questions about his experience and the work that he is currently doing.
