The eighth grade class embarked on a three day trip to Washington, DC., on Wednesday April 29. The class, accompanied by house advisors and other chaperones, arrived in our nation's capital, toured Capital Hill, met with Senator Charles Schumer, and sat in the Senate chambers while members of the United States Senate voted on a bill. On Thursday, the group viewed the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. They then had the chance to have a question and answer session with Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy, and Sonia Sotomayor. The grade then toured the Martin Luther King Jr., Jefferson and FDR Memorials. On Friday morning, they walked through Arlington National Cemetery, where they had a chance to see the Eternal Flame, and witnessed the changing of the guards at the Tomb of The Unknowns.
There were many purposes for the trip to DC. It was an opportunity for the entire grade to spend some time together as a community outside of school. The trip also dovetailed with many curricular themes from this academic year. The students study American History in their Social Justice classes and read such important American works such as Of Mice and Men, To Kill A Mockingbird and The Crucible. It is everyone's hope that the eighth grade will re-examine many of the themes in these texts, after they had this robust and first-hand experience of Washington, DC.
