Dee Mingey MS Social Studies Teacher Prepares for Her New Curriculum

With the support of the Faculty Association and the Dalton Global Initiatives, Dee traveled to Istanbul, Ephesus, and Cappadocia this summer. She transitioned from teaching 5th grade, in which students learned of one of the earliest settlements (7500 BCE), Catal Huyuk in the southern area of the country, to 7th grade in which students studied Constantinople, Byzantium, and the Ottoman Empire. Dee  believes her teaching will be permanently impacted by what she learned of history, culture, and the importance of exchange.
The most enlightening aspects of the weeks she spent in Turkey were casual exchanges with men and women from the country. Conversations with tour guides, teachers, and salesmen, among others, demonstrated varied perspectives on the role of women in Turkish and Islamic societies, attitudes toward the sudden arrival of thousands Syrian refugees, outlooks on the preservation of the ancient arts of the country, perceptions of politics in Turkey, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, and feelings toward the religions of the world. As Dee stated,  "The depth and dignity of others in our world compel me to look more closely at my own beliefs."
