A Reflective Dalton Student Art Exhibition at the Child Mind Institute

The Child Mind Institute’s Student Art Project launched its newest exhibit on Sunday, October 19 with Pastel Self-Portraits: Works by students from The Dalton School. Ms. Do's classes suspended their self-critical thinking about their drawing skills to carefully observe themselves in the mirror in order to render a reflective self-portrait that illuminated their self-perception and how they would like others to perceive them.
In the spring of 2014, students in Ms. Do's Beginning Drawing classes at The Dalton School were asked to suspend self-critical thinking about their drawing skills. The portraits are made by high school students ranging in age from 13 to 17 years. There is a wide range of abilities in the class as it is a beginning class for some of the students. The students studied facial proportions, shapes, and composition while exploring ways to create a variety of skin tones. Carefully observing facial structure in a mirror, the students also focused on light sources. These courageous observational self-portraits exemplify The Dalton School motto, "Go Forth Unafraid." The art will be on display at The Child Mind Institute throughout the winter. View the works in the Child Mind Institute online gallery.

A ceremony celebrating the inaugural exhibit, funded by the Doris Sirow Memorial Art Fund, accompanied the exhibition.  This fund was established to honor the legacy of Doris Sirow. It ensures that the Child Mind Institute Student Art Program will continues to give local students the opportunity to display their artwork in the halls and public spaces of the Child Mind Institute. The artwork helps to create a warm and inviting environment for patients and their families.
