In honor of the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead, an ofrenda was on display in the 89th Street lobby during the week leading up to Halloween. The students' exploration of the Day of the Dead was a continuation of a celebration of Hispanic/Latino heritage at Dalton.
Kindergarten Spanish students learned traditional songs and read the picture book Mi FamiliaCalaca. Many of the kindergartners visited the ofrenda and completed a scavenger hunt with the items on display. Middle School students read a novella called Tumba and a picture book called Mi Abuela Ya No Está. Students created mini-ofrendas and decorated paper maché skull masks. High School students learned about the historical origins of the Day of the Dead as well as explored its socio-political significance.
